Sanitation is a critical aspect of inclusive development, and IDC is committed to addressing global challenges and promoting local transformation, social justice, and self-reliance through innovative approaches. The organization adopts a Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach to promote behavior change and eliminate open defecation in communities.
IDC also uses Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) strategies to engage communities and promotes the use of appropriate technologies in water and sanitation development. The organization has prioritized the needs of marginalized groups, promoting gender-sensitive and disability-inclusive strategies in sanitation promotion.
The sanitation ladder is a key tool used by IDC to track progress in sanitation promotion and transformation. We work with communities in a facilitative role to help them move up the ladder, from open defecation to using basic latrines, and eventually to improved sanitation facilities.
IDC has also implemented latrine technologies in villages and schools to promote safe and hygienic sanitation practices. Through community engagement and education, IDC has successfully established over 2,300 Open Defecation Free (ODF) communities, where all members have access to safe and hygienic sanitation facilities.
The transformation that IDC has brought about in communities through sanitation promotion is remarkable. We have effectively tackled global water challenges by prioritizing sustainability, equity, and inclusion in drilling for water. This approach has led to improved health outcomes, increased school attendance, and reduced gender-based violence, among other benefits.
IDC’s vision of building a dignified world of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice is reflected in its commitment to sanitation. By adopting innovative approaches to sanitation promotion and transformation, IDC is making a significant contribution to advancing inclusive development and promoting social justice.
