Agriculture, food security, and livelihoods are critical to our vision of advancing inclusive development. The organization’s mission to address global development challenges and promote social justice and self-reliance can be effectively achieved by incorporating agriculture and food security in our menu of interventions.
One of the key strategies we adopt to promote agriculture and food security is to build resilience. This involves implementing measures that help communities and farmers adapt to climate change, natural disasters, and other shocks and stresses. For example, we provide farmers with drought-resistant crops and help them access low-premium insurance programs that protect them against crop and livestock losses.
Another approach is the establishment of farmer field schools. These are training programs that help farmers acquire new skills and knowledge to improve their crop yields and incomes. We partner with local organizations to establish these schools and develop curricula that focus on sustainable agriculture practices.
Agri-business initiatives play a critical role in promoting agriculture and food security. IDC support’s the establishment of small and medium-sized enterprises that focus on processing and marketing agricultural products. This has created jobs and improved incomes for farmers, while also promoting food security by increasing the availability of locally produced food.
Our climate-smart agriculture interventions help farmers adapt to the changing climate while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We promote the adoption of sustainable farming practices such as agroforestry, conservation agriculture, and integrated crop-livestock systems.
